Discovering and Posting a New Post

Let’s actually use this software for it’s main feature: discovering content and posting it to your blog

  1.  Hitting the Discover menu item on the left, you’re presented with the general topics.  For simplicity, I’ll just work from this main screen.

To post it to our blog, all we have to do is hit the little green Post button to start the process.

As you can see, you now have a post content form with everything all filled out.  The content of the news you chose is populated for you.

It’s very simple.  You just choose which website you want to send it to in the drop-down and whether you want to post it to the social account.

The ability to schedule it for a later post time is extremely powerful.  You can actually schedule all of your posts at one time and save yourself quite a bit of time.

What Are Long Tail Keywords and Why Should You Care?

A long tail keyword is a three to five word keyword phrase that aims to capture targeted search traffic.  Long tail keywords get less search traffic but common have high conversion rates, as they are far more specific.  Quite often long tail keywords are very profitable search traffic.  The general idea is you are trying to attract visitors are late in the buying process and are prepared to buy with the right information.  Hence, these long tail keywords have a high conversion rate but low search volume.

Let’s look at an example. “Nike running shoes for men” is a 5-word example of a long tail keyword.  In contrast, “running shoes” is a short tail keyword.  If you looking for someone ready to buy shoes, in this case the long tail keyword is someone about ready to buy with the right information presented to them.

This is a good time to mention that just because a keyword is long doesn’t necessarily make it long tail.    What usually defines a long tail keyword is the search volume, competition, and conversion rates.

What Exactly Makes a Keyword Long Tail?

Generally, keywords are long tail if they are less common.  The reason they got the term long tail and not some other general term actually comes from statistics.  In statistics, Long Tail is a term relation to the distribution and how many occurrences  they have in relation to the head, or more common part.

Those terms sound complex, but looking at the below graph, the yellow part are the head terms, or very common searches on the internet.  The green section is the long tail keywords section.  These are the terms with much less search volume.  The long tail terms are your terms that are very specific and might only have a couple of dozen searches a month, but they are laser targetted.  These are the terms like “buy nike mens running shoes”.  The customer is looking very specifically for something and if you can fill that need you get to pocket some cash.

This is how the search demand curve appears when you map out keyword competition vs search volume.

You might wonder now how many searches a month these long tail keywords really get.  Ahrefs reported recently that 92% of all keywords get 10 or fewer searches per month, making them all long tail by definition.

The key to a profitable long tail keyword is to meet up with the customer right about the time they are ready to purchase:

  1. The customer hears about a product on a forum or from an email.
  2. The customer looks up more information about the product and the concept in general.
  3. The customer looks up reviews and opinions on the product.
  4. The customer decides to purchase today.    <— This is where you want to have your long tail keyword
  5. The customer buys the product.

Why are Long Tail Keywords Less Competitive?

While that satisfies the search volume part of the long tail keyword definition, there also needs to be less competition.  While for some keyword phrases like “instagram marketing” will have a lot of competition and search volume, if you look at a phrase like “instagram marketing strategies for small business in the philippines”, that is a fairly specific phrase.  In Long Tail Pro it shows up as a zero monthly searches with a competition difficulty level of 33.  If you search this term in Google, you’ll see that the first few entries are social media marketing in the Phillipines followed by general social marketing places.  With a well-written article, you could easily slide into the top 2-3 places and you’re up and you’ll get some of the searches coming to your site.  By the way, below about 50  monthly searches they usually just round off to zero so in this case just ignore the search volume number.

At this point, a keyword research tool can help you find competition but it’s still fairly subjecting.  The competition difficulty level is based off of the Domain Authority(DA) and Page Authority(PA) of the top search results.  However, it usually takes a person looking at the search results to realize that while the pages themselves are strong, they are not entirely focused on the search terms so they fit the bill relatively but they can be beaten with an article focused on that particular term.

While this wasn’t always the case, it is more and more.  In fact, beginning with the January 2020 updates, Google is getting better at telling which results answer the search request the best.

As an example, let’s look at a phrase “how short can i cut my cats nails”.  It’s definitely a long tail keyword.

If you search it on Google, right now here is the list of domains that come back, the top entry is for  They rank above and well above sitting at #10.  The fact is, if your website page fits the query well and focuses on that topic answering the searcher’s intent, and your site in general has a lot of cat info, you have a very good shot at the top entries.  Just be complete, and remember that each new articles is making your site the authority more and more.

Still not convinced?

I have a site I started ( I won’t give away what my main topic is) a few months ago, and my article #22 was well written but nothing like a 10,000 word article.  It did, however, answer the search term specifically instead of being just general info.  Having your entire article focus around the topic and not getting off on a tangent is how you win.  This is a screenshot from part of KeySearch.  My site has a Page Authority of 4 at that point and a Domain Authority of 1.  So fairly typical of a new site with few if any links.

It’s a term that gets maybe 50 monthly searches at best and is a difficulty score of 25.  What I want to show you here is that it is in fact ranking above sites with authority far, far above my site’s and yet I outrank them.  With some work I’m sure the article could move up 2-3 spots.

What it means is that if you pick out long tail keywords and write articles around them, you can have lots of small wins.  In this case, it’s for a term where the affiliate commission would net me roughly $12-14 per sale and the term is the searching looking for something very specific and likely ready to buy.  6-7 of these customers per month could net me $100/month by itself.

$100 a month isn’t ground-breaking, but repeat it 20 times and you’re talkign $2000/month which is pretty significant.

As a byproduct, the more articles you have, the more you are the authority so your future articles will help your older ones move up as well.  It’s a win-win.

How to Find Long Tail Keywords?

At this point, you’re probably wondering how you find these elusive long tail keywords.  It’s a fair question and it’s something you do better with practice.

1.  Google Autocomplete

If you just go to and start typing a phrase, it will choose many others to suggest.  These are based off of the phrase you choose, which in this case is “link building tools”.  These are actual terms that people do in fact search for, so if you choose one of these search queries to write an article on it, you will be writing an article for an active term.  Chosen right, a search query can make you money day after day without further work.

Pro Tip: You can also start to type a new word and while you are typing the word new suggestions will pop up.  You can direct the results you get in this way.

2.  Answer The Public is one of those hidden gems that I use all the time.  You just put in a term and it gathers the searches that people are actually doing in Google.  It basically is an easier way to get the data from #1 but you have less control over what it gathers. result

3.  Keyword Research Tools like Long Tail Pro

There are also keyword research tools that are made just so you can make the most of your time.  It’s always a time and money trade-off so the key is to pick wisely.  In this case, I like Long Tail Pro because it’s very reasonably priced and it’s been around for quite awhile.

When you want to find some keywords, just put in a term and voila:

You get a quick set of results.  In this case I was looking for keyword ranking tools and have it filtered down rather narrowly to show the variety of information available.  You get a quick search volume as well as the competition.  I still followup by hand no matter what tool and search the phrase manually to see the competition but getting an initial value is very handy.  LTP also highlights the Keyword Competition (KC) to let you know which ones will be attainable by your site easily and which have more work to get first page on.

I tend to use the keyword tool Long Tail Pro and Answer The Public to find a list of long tail keywords and then I narrow down by hand by looking at the competition to see how specific their pages are and if they answer the search term.

Additionally, Moz has a great writeup of keyword research in general.  When combined with long tail keyword research, it can become an extremely powerful tool.

How to Turn Long Tail Keyword Traffic into Money?

This is the part that many people get wrong.  You want to tie in your article to be the #1 result for the customer’s search ideally.

Make sure the first thing you do is address the long tail keyword.  Make sure your article or page centers on the topic and make sure it addresses the intent of the search.

Within your page, you can then suggest specific products that will address what they are looking for, or perhaps suggest the best price and place to get it.  This would be an example of affiliate sales and the page itself is part of affiliate marketing.

First you need to make sure to get customers before you can capitalize on having the customer.  Perhaps you are a business, and on your page you mention the product is 10% today or something similar.

Just remember first and foremost to address the needs of your customer or you won’t get the first page placement on any of the search engines.

The key to getting better at finding and landing good long tail keyword placement is getting started.  Over time you will better at writing and reading what the user needs, and you will get better at finding the keywords that are worth the most to you.  The key is to just get moving to succeed.

Last Minute Tips

Once you pick the right keywords, it’s time to get that article together and hit a home run.

  • Make sure your website loads as fast as possible.  In this day of mobile-first indexing loading speed is a critical factor on how your website ranks.
  • Optimize your on-page SEO as much as possible.  It’s fully in your control and it’s the first step to getting a good-ranking webpage.
  • Write a catchy title and description.  You get once chance at catching the searcher’s eye and this will be it.  Stand out from the pack.
  • Use free SEO tools that are available from Google.  I have a post right here that lists out the Google tools and how to use them to track your progress.
  • Use keyword research tools to speed up the research section of topic brainstorming.  Make the most of your time so you can have the most success.

How To Build a Website In WordPress From Scratch [2020]

Setting Up WordPress

Creating your new website online is one of the most critical steps in establishing your online presence.  Do it right and it pushes you towards success.  Do it wrong and it hinders your success.

For a person new to building a website this can seem like a daunting task.  Today, I’m going to give you a hand by showing you the ropes in creating your own website in WordPress from scratch.  I recommend WordPress as the Content Management System (CMS) as it handles a lot of the display and website structure tasks and leaves you to focus on your content.  WordPress is one of the most popular website builder softwares out and there and it’s even free!

What I’m going to outline to you is how I go about creating a new website and it’s the process I recommend to anybody who hasn’t done it before.  The process involves everything from choosing your domain through to setting up a system that helps you to publish your content.  In this method, I am going to have you setup WordPress as it’s easy to use and for most hosting providers it has a one click install button.

Choose a Domain Name

The very first you’ll want to do is choose a domain name.  A domain name is how people will find you much the way brings people here.

While you could go to and setup a blog on there for free, you will just be a page on someone else’s big site and you won’t be building out your own ideas and you don’t have the total creative freedom you do from your own WordPress install.  Getting a domain and building your own site is not only satisfying, but you’re building up your own corner of the web that’s all yours.

While you can build your site on top of one of the Web 2.0 platforms like Weebly or Medium, you’ll never really make it your own until you have your own domain.  Once you have your own domain, you can host your site anywhere that has internet connections, and we’ll cover that more in the next section.

When brainstorming a new domain name, there are some general guidelines I try to go by to help find a good domain name:

  • It should be obvious from the name the topic of your site (if possible).  Sometimes you pick a unique name to try to brand which is fine as well.  But if you’re writing a blog about Baseball bats, then TopBaseballBats is better than Baseball stuff.  This one has a lot of flexibility but you get the idea.
  • Make it easy to type
  • Keep it as short as possible yet meaningful
  • Don’t use hyphens, numbers, or anything else.  You want to be able to verbally be able to tell your domain to someone and they’ll be able to type it in and get to your site easily.

How Do I Register a New Domain Name?

While it is possible to just go and register your domain name and then modify the records to point to the host you’re going to use, there’s an easier way.

The easier way is also cheaper and far easier.  Some hosting providers provide you a free domain of your choosing upon choosing a hosting package.  Getting the domain and hosting in one step makes it far easier to avoid surprises and complicated technical configurations.

By itself, a domain name is usually around $15 a year to purchase.  With the Bluehost deal I can give you in the next section, you can get a free domain name with hosting for only $3.75 per month for shared hosting.  And you own your domain too that is uniquely yours.  That is one incredible deal for a managed wordpress hosting service.

Setup Your Hosting Provider

It’s time to ahead and start setting up your hosting account and get your free domain name with it.

I highly recommend Bluehost as it has been incredibly fast hosting everytime I’ve used it and it’s been trouble-free.  That’s why I recommend them above others is that they have been consistently good and no issues.  There are a few web hosting companies that stand out as high-quality and Bluehost is at the top of my list.

So head over to Bluehost and click on the big green Getting Started button.

After you hit the button, you’ll see the account signup options.  Choose the Basic account on the left which comes with a free domain, 50GB of storage, and unmetered bandwidth.  The Basic account comes with everything you’ll need to have a domain, a site, and WordPress so you can be up and typing away on your new site in an hour.

The next step is where you choose your new domain name that people will use to find your site.  If you’re stuck for ideas, you can always hit the link for I’ll create my domain later.

Once you get past the domain step, the next thing is the payment screen.  You just need to put in the standard info of you name, address, credit card, etc.  After that, you’re all signed up with a brand new domain and a brand new hosting account, ready to tackle the world.

The next thing you’ll see is a Welcome screen from BlueHost and now your account is created:

At this point, your account is created, but it’s not entirely activated just yet.  You’ll need to go check your email for an email from BlueHost that is your Welcome email with an activation link in it.  If you don’t see it after 5 minutes, check your Spam folder.  You’ll see something like this in the body of the email:

Click on the Verify Your Email button and your account is now activated.

If you go back to your web browser tab with the Create Your Password button, click that now to set your BlueHost password and finish setting up your account.

Next, the system will ask you to pick a theme.  There are lots of great choices so feel free to pick one.  This is easily changeable from the Themes menu once you’re in the WordPress dashboard so if there isn’t one you like, scroll to the bottom and click skip for now.

On the next screen, you’ll get a nice simple message that setup is complete and you can now either go to your Bluehost hosting control panel  or Start Building your site.  Click on the Start Building button and let’s jump right into your new site.

Setting up Your New WordPress Website

When you setup your Bluehost account, by default bluehost will install WordPress for you.  Now is the fun part of customizing your corner of the web.

Everything you will need to configure for your site, you will be using WordPress to do it.  The main WordPress dashboard is your administrator dashboard to make your site yours.

Your theme is what styles your blog to look a certain way.  It may have 3 columns.  It may have 2 columns.  It may have thumbnails to posts at the top.  You can even change it later on to get just the look you want.

You can get to the Themes section by choosing Appearance (or paintbrush icon) and then choose Themes.

You’ll see a couple of basic free themes and one will be activated.

From there, you can choose another by selecting it and hitting the Activate button, or you can add a new theme.  I personally like the ones from themes at MyThemeShop.  If you visit MyThemeShop, click on Themes from the top menu and then click on the Free tag to see the ones you can download and use completely free.

The free wordpress themes are amazing and I have tried a few of them and I am using one right here on the site in fact.  They are among the most streamlined and efficient themes I have found and with Google being Mobile-first indexing, speed is a major concern now for sites.  So you can’t go wrong with one of their Themes.

Both the free wordpress themes and paid wordpress themes even come with some of their plugins to add some cool features to your site.  If you have a little extra cash you can upgrade to one of the premium paid themes but if not they are there and worth a look.

Write Your Content

The next step is to pick some good article topics and start writing.  Think about your visitors and try to provide complete and useful information.  Don’t worry about whether Google likes it but try to provide the best user experience for your visitors with your blog posts.

Starting out, the best thing you can focus on is to make your pages interesting to read.  Add images, video, and feel free to let your personality shine through in your writing.

This is a skill that you will hone and grow over time, but the key is try to view it from the user perspective.  You can get across your thoughts, ideas, and tips, and it can still be interesting and funny to read.  Feel free to break up blocks of words into smaller paragraphs that are easier to digest but way easier to read on a mobile device.

Once you publish your first blog article, you are now the proud owner of a blog that the entire world can come see!

Make The Required Website Pages

All sites will want to create a few standard pages as it’s what both users and Google expects:

  • About Us
    Having an about us page is mandatory at this point.  It doesn’t have to be overly extensive, but you want to put a little blurb about who you are and why you are making a site.
  • Contact Us
    Having a Contact Us page is always a good idea so that your visitors have a way to contact you.  Makes sense right?  Make sure to put a contact form on the page and you can get emails in a jiffy.
  • Privacy Policy
    A privacy policy is a standard part of websites, especially in the wake of the GDPR privacy regulations in Europe.  Let users know what info you may collect, etc.

Create a Social Media Presence

A social presence is a given nowadays and it’s highly recommended.  Create these social accounts:

The general idea is you want to have a presence out there which will also help your site.  Make sure to create content before worrying about a social presence.

Posting on Facebook or Pinterest or Twitter helps people to find your site and know it exists.

What Now?

Now that you’ve read the step by step guide above to get an idea of what a standard install of WordPress is like, you have many options.

What Type of Website Can You Build?

There are numerous types of websites that you can build apart from blogs, and largely it’s the format and content that varies.

  • Personal Blog
  • Blogs about topics such as plants
  • Online Store websites
    You can easily have an online store to either sell your own products or setup a drop-shipping website
  • Brick and Mortar Store Website
    If you have a store with a physical location, you’ll still want a website to either provide information about you to potential customers or even allow ordering from the website.

What Other Website Builders Are There?

While WordPress is one of the most widely used website builders in the world, there are others.

If you’re building an online store, Shopify may be a great alternative to building your online store.  In this case, I would still install WordPress, but I’d install the WooCommerce plugin which can integrate with a Shopify account and you get the best of both worlds.

If you are building a regular blog, it is possible to code the entire site by hand, but the time for what you get out of it isn’t worth it in many cases unless it’s something custom that a CMS system such as WordPress can accomodate.

What I recommend is getting a Bluehost account, setting up WordPress, and trying it for yourself so you can get first-hand experience with setting up a site and the joy it brings.

Is Keyword Research Dead or is it a Hoax?

No, keyword research is not dead.  Keyword research is still very important in planning new content and will in the foreseeable future.  Knowing search volume as well as who are competing with directly is invaluable information.

The thing to remember is that you are writing your content around a topic, not specific keywords.  Don’t load up the target keywords thinking you’ll taking the lead because it will likely instead cause a penalty.

Keyword research is, at this point, entirely looking for topics to write about.  You’re writing for an intent more than specific keywords.  Write naturally since you’re writing for people and not search engines now.

In fact, it might even be more proper to call it topic research now.  In any case, content strategy has been changing and I think for many of us putting in the hard work it’s for the better.  Content marketing is an ever-evolving system but do things right and you’ll always come out on top.

Semantic Search

Google has pushed farther and farther into semantic searching.  In semantic analysis, Google is looking more into the meaning behind the words rather than the exact words themselves.  They are making great strives into this Artificial Intelligence understanding of what sites are talking about.

Google also had a major update in October 2019 with the BERT update.  In the BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) update, Google looks more deeply into complex queries to understand what the searcher really is looking for.  This is the main reason why it’s important to note searcher intent when you are writing content around a topic.

Because of all of these changes, the old ways of just dropping keywords all over the place and ranking high on page 1 are long gone.

Now, when you write you’ll want to look further into the meaning and what type of information search engines are looking for.

User Intent

In recent days, the intent of the user is key.  If you master it, you can rank your pages high.  When you have a search phrase, it’s important to think about some key pieces on Google to help you figure out what the user intent is.

  1. Plug your search term into google and bring up the search results.
  2. Look through the results, especially the first 5, to see what type of information Google best matched to the search term.
  3. See what Youtube videos Google picked to show.
  4. Look at the People also ask section for additional related topics.
  5. Look down at the related searches section at the bottom to see what related keywords Google has matched up.

Let’s go ahead and do a real life example of the search term “keyword research tool youtube”.  This has a little trickiness because it could be a tool to help figure out what to put on youtube, or it could be information on Youtube about research tools.

Looking at the search results, it appears that Google is expecting the user intent to looking for keyword tools to help rank better in Youtube.  Quite often the results of the rest of the check of searching intent will line up and confirm what we are seeing.

From the above picture, you can also see that Google is showing videos on YouTube keyword research as well.  Again, just confirms what we are seeing.

The People Also Ask section will show you related topics to this search as seen by Google.  You actually get more than one thing out of this.  For one, you can see if the related topics make sense with the main topic as it appears.  Secondly, you get idea for other articles and posts, as well as ideas you may be able to incorporate for a bigger article.

In this case, there are questions about keyword planners for YouTube and the best keywords for a YouTube video.

Related searches are also big, sometimes even bigger than the related questions.  You will see search results which Google feels are closely related to these search terms.

Pro Tip: One little SEO trick not everybody will tell you is that these are actually LSI (Latent Semantic Index) keywords that you can get a little advantage by pulling some of these into your article.  Covering more than one related topic gives you an authority advantage over those who don’t.

What Do These Pieces All Mean Put Together?

When you look at all of the clues on a search results page, you have somewhat of a topic and outline of what your article should meet at a minimum to rank.

In this case, someone searching for the term “keyword research tool youtube” would expect to see an article on researching keywords to rank their YouTube videos.  Because a keyword planner is in the People Also Ask box, you can see that it’s likely that the searcher is looking for a tool that provies both keywords and search volume within YouTube.  They are likely even wondering how to start doing YouTube videos with some basic research questions like how to decide on what to write and how to get more views.

Looking at the related search queries, it’s easy to see that people frequently look for chrome extensions to give them video tags and such set on videos.  It’s such a strong related search in fact for tags to put on YouTube videos that I would devote a fair amount of writing to using tools like the Chrome extension vidIQ to see what other videos are using as their tags and such.

That’s a pretty fair amount of information that you can glean just by looking at a search page.  The one thing I would add is to look at and read the top 10 results to see the quality, general topics, and length of the articles.  Yours needs to be as complete or even more if you want to aim for the top spot.  To be at the top, you need to be the best.

Keyword Difficulty

Keyword difficulty is one of the many factors that is helpful to know before you write an article.  Ideally you’ll write an article that you can top the competition given your writing skills and authority of your website.

While I feel like numbers are not everything, Domain Authority and Page Authority generated by Moz does give an idea of the relative strength of a given page in the search results.  All else being equal, the higher authority site gets a serious edge.  Have you noticed that around SEO certain sites almost always tend to be on the first page even if the search term is extremely focused and their article is in the same general area.

My two recommendations are to go to long tail keywords and to use a keyword research tool

Long tail keywords have lower search volumes because they are specific in nature, but they also have lower competition because less people are targeting many search phrases directly.  Ahrefs estimates around 92% of keyword phrases are actually long tail so there are plenty to go around.  Just pick the best ones if you can.

As for a keyword research tool, I would recommend Long Tail Pro.  It’s a great product that does wonders in helping you find top-notch keywords that can start getting you massive traffic.  Add to that a free 7-day trial and it’s a win-win.

Creating Search Engine Friendly Content

Now when you go to create your content, your keyword research really pays off.  You’ll know your topic, points to hit, and about what type of quality you need to bring to the table.  So in this way, keyword research is far from dead.

Long Tail Pro vs KWFinder – Choose Your Tool Wisely

There are many keyword research tools on the market.  Two of the most common reasonably-priced ones are Long Tail Pro and KWFinder.

Both Long Tail Pro and KWFinder are very capable tools for the average content writer.  They both return plenty of usable results and are both affordable for the average blogger.  However, I have to give Long Tail Pro the win here as it is a bit less expensive and provides competitor analysis functionality in addition to all that KWFinder does.

These tools specialize in finding long tail keywords. If your site doesn’t have much authority yet, these long tail keywords are the key (forgive the pun) to finding traffic you can rank for and get the ball rolling.

Read along and I’ll give you where each of these tools excels and give you an honest comparison of these tools.

What is Long Tail Pro?

Long Tail Pro is a keyword tool originally written in 2011 and it’s been getting better since.  It is a cloud-based tool that puts the power of any device that can access the internet.

The primary goal behind Long Tail Pro (or LTP it’s called for short) is to help you find long tail keywords so you can put together content for low competition keywords and it brainstorms relevant keywords quite well.  You just give it up to 5 seed keywords and it will search out and find all the variations.  Then, it will get you a keyword difficulty score.

What is KWFinder?

KWFinder  is a keyword research tool by Mangools and first released in 2014.

KWFinder is also a tool that specializes in helping you find those sweet long tail keywords.  Just like LTP, you search and you get results that give you Moz scores like DA and PA as well as number of incoming links and more.

How are Long Tail Pro and KWFinder Similar?

In many ways, these tools aim to provide the same service.  They are tools to help you find the best long tail keywords to help your site grow.

  • Put in keywords to search out a list of related keywords and their difficulty
  • Filter the keyword results by search traffic volume or keyword difficulty
  • Import and export keywords
  • Organize keyword lists to keep them separate (though you’ll see in the next section they do it very differently).
  • Get keyword difficulty to help gauge how attainable getting page 1 is for a given keywords.
  • SERP analysis on keywords

The list above is the basic list of keyword research tool core function that nearly every tools from LTP to KWFinder to Ahrefs to SEMRush will have.  Let’s look now how they are different.

How are Long Tail Pro and KWFinder Different?

Competitor Research

Long Tail Pro has an entire section just on competitor research.  There are actually two ways you can research competitors to try to get an edge.

In the Keyword Research section, you can plug in a competitor’s URL where you would normally put in seed keywords.  This will find the keywords related to that content to give you a starting point for you similar content.

You can also go into the SERP Analysis section and plug in a competitor’s URL to get a full analysis

Being able to do competitor research is a key piece of keyword research.

Projects / Lists

In Long Tail Pro, you can create a new project and maintain a separate one for each site you are working on.  It’s very handy when you add in the site’s domain so your keyword results have a green or yellow on it based on how capable your own site is of ranking.

In KWFinder you can also put lists of keywords separately into different buckets but it’s more the keywords themselves and not any associated data.  Still plenty useful but LTP gets the edge here because you can associate the domain with it to make filtering keywords easier.

How Much Do These Tools Cost?

Long Tail Pro starts out at $25 per month with the Long Tail Pro Starter plan.  It allows up to 800 searches per 24 hours and tracking up to 30 keywords in the rank tracker.

KWFinder starts out at $29.90 per month with the Mangools Basic plan.  It allows up to 100 searches per 24 hours and tracking up to 200 keywords in the rank tracker.

The KWFinder’s Mangools Agency plan has 1,200 searches per month for $79.90 per month.  When compared to the 800 searches for the lowest Long Tail Pro plan, KWFinder is 3x more expensive.

LTP allows up to 2,500 searches per 24 hours with it’s $45 per month plan if you really need a lot of searches but want to save money.

Long Tail Pro vs KWFinder – Which is Better?

Both of these tools are very capable and will give you comparable results for the same times of searches.

Only Long Tail Pro has competitor analysis and to be honest you really want this.  It makes it far easier to see more info about sites you are trying to outrank and it also shows you their keywords and volumes and such.  Pretty much a necessity.

For the money, you get much more searching volume with Long Tail Pro and it provides roughly the same quality of results as KWFinder.  Long Tail Pro is about 1/3 the cost of KWFinder so if money is an issue (and when isn’t it really…who purposely overspends) then Long Tail Pro is likely the right product for you.

Is Long Tail Pro Worth it? My Honest View of LTP

The question with any keyword research tool is whether it works, and then is it worth it for the cost.  I might even say virtually anything you buy there is the same two questions.  This one I’ll answer here however.

Long Tail Pro is a very effective keyword research tool and is very worth of it’s small price.  It is far less than many competitors in price, but provides a very competitive set of functionality for the user.

However, you shouldn’t just take my word for it.  Afterall, that’s why you are reading this article.  So I’ll show you why I like Long Tail Pro and compare it in price/functionality with the others so you can decide for yourself and make an informed decision.

How Much is Long Tail Pro?

Right now Long Tail Pro (LTP) is $25/month for the silver package and $47/month for the Pro version:

I find the Starter package works well.  Generally I don’t use more than 200-300 searches in a 24-hour period so the 800 is plenty.  You can even sign up for a 7-day trial for $1 which is pretty good so you can try it for yourself.  There is an easy cancel button right on the webpage under billing so there’s no hassle at all canceling.

What Does Long Tail Pro Do?

Long Tail Pro is like many of the other keyword research tools so the main functionality you get is doing keyword searches.  It does this quite well.

The concept behind finding long tail keywords is that there is less competition and you can rank for lots of smaller keywords and get some significant traffic.  That’s the entire reason for using a tool such as this.

The above is the main interface.  As you can see, you can search for keywords by either entering seed keywords, or it’s possible to add in a result as a seed keyword and get more results along those lines.

PRO TIP: I personally like to find a keyword with a Keyword Competitiveness (KC) score of around 40 that has a healthy search volume and adding that into the existing seed keywords so I get longer tail version of that keyword and it usually turns up some great results.

You can also do things like keyword rank tracking and competitor analysis.  The competitors analysis is also a mainstay of many of these keyword tools since quite often you know your competition and reverse-engineering their keywords may give you a game plan for ranking on those keywords yourself.

How Does Long Tail Pro Compare to Competitors in Price and Functionality?

The main competitors to LTP are ahrefs, Keysearch, and Market Samurai.  Let’s look at those now and see how the price and functionality compare.

Ahrefs is considered one of the top keyword tools in the market.  It does have keyword searching tools, but the strong point for paying $99+/month for Ahrefs is that it has great analysis functionality.  This is most likely a main reason for the higher cost.  It is very handy at competitor research as well as tracking organic vs paid traffic and all of that.

It’s a great tool but from a keyword research view, it is a little better but 4x the cost.


Keysearch logo is one of my favorite tools.  I do have an account still and I use it often.  Just for the top 10 stats on the sites to get the Moz data is very handy for the price.  However, it is a bit more clunky looking for long tail keywords.

I do prefer how Long Tail Pro just gives you all of the keyword difficulty numbers and in Keysearch on the basic plan you get 200 lookups a day.  So you are a bit more restricted even though it’s much cheaper and still does an amazing job at keyword research.

Market Samurai

Market Samurai is my last choice out of all of these.  I just prefer cloud-based solutions to be honest.  I like being able to access it from any device.

Market Samurai is like Keysearch is that you can only use one seed keyword to search around.  LTP allows up to 5 which is pretty handy for drilling down in 5 minutes to find your long tail keywords.

All of these are plenty capable to be honest, and a tool is only part of what you need to do in your head with digital marketing.  I use these in addition to to find keyword to write on.

Will Keyword Research Tools Work In The Future?

Keyword research is going to be here to stay.

Think of it this way .. you are going to write some content and you’ll have to have at least something of a keyword or topic to write around.

The key here is that you need to write around keywords like they are a topic.  Don’t focus on the literal keyword.  It is just the starting point for your content.  Google is all about Semantic Searches now.  You can read more about how to write content over on my post about Is Keyword Research Dead.

Funny enough, it’s actually getting easier to create content from an author perspetive.  Google is getting better at understanding what you mean and not the old days where a keyword is used x number of times.  For people who are honestly creating great user content, it’s a great thing.

So just do your research with your copy of Long Tail Pro, look on Google at the top 10 results, and write your content.  Rinse and repeat.  Enjoy Success 🙂

Does Long Tail Pro Still Work? Is It The Best?


Keyword research has been, and still is, the best way to start out a new niche website.  You need to find long tail keywords with low competition so you can rank and get traffic.  These tools have been around for awhile .. do they still work to find you keywords you can rank and bank?

Long Tail Pro does still work and is still a great investment.  It does a great job of finding long tail keywords.  It can still use some improvements which I’ll go into below, but overall it’s well worth it and it still works exceptionally.

Suffice to say, keyword research is still alive and well.  Finding a keyword and then writing quality content around that keyword / topic (that is, don’t focus on the keyword itself literally so much) works and will continue working.

What is Long Tail Pro?

Long Tail Pro is a well-known keyword research tool originally written in 2011 and it is getting better with every revision.  The latest version is a cloud-based version that is even more useful as it’s accessible on ALL devices.

Long Tail PRO (or LTP it’s called sometimes) is designed to do one thing, and it does it very well.  It is exceptionally good at finding the user long tail keywords.  These long tail keywords are the really profitable keywords because it’s the ones where people know what they are looking for so for sales it’s perfect.

Long tail keywords encompass a vast majority of searches, but is characteristic in having low competition keywords and reasonable monthly search volume.  These keywords are more specific in nature and is generally someone looking for specific information to purchase a product or service.

When you are starting a newer site, you generally don’t have much authority and can get outranked easily.  When you find these keywords that have good quality searches with low competition, you can cash in and get both traffic and sales easy.  You’re in essence looking for the low-hanging fruit.

Once you get the hang of it, the keyword research process is actually enjoyable because of the results you’ll see from it.

Does Long Tail Pro Still Work?

It most definitely does still work today.  In fact, I was just on Long Tail Pro and found some amazing keywords for another one of my blogs on sports.

LTP is simple to use.  You just pick your main topic keyword such as “keto” and plug it into the Seed Keywords box in the top and hit the Retrive button.

Pretty quickly you get back a ton of keyword results that has the Average Keyword Competitiveness score based on the page 1 results in Google for that term.  You also get back the PPC bids cost so you can see which are valuable keywords.  Quite often higher PPC bids go hand-in-hand with higher keyword competition scores but sometimes you find that gem in there and it’s like finding gold.

The Keyword Competitiveness for a given page is based on the domain authority, page authority, and backlinks.

The Long Tail Pro cloud version can be yours for $25 per month and you get 800 lookups per 24 hours.

How Does Long Tail Pro Compare To Similar Keyword Research Tools?

There are many competitors such as Ahrefs, Market Samurai, and Keysearch that all do similar functionality.  Each does some things better, some things worse.  So far, they’ve all worked however.

Ahrefs is a heck of a tool.  It is well-known, and it has earned that quality reputation.  The problem is that Ahrefs starts at $99/month and goes up to $399/month.

It’s just plain expensive.  If you are doing very well online and can afford it than it’s a great choice.  For most of us, Long Tail Pro is a better choice at $25/month and it has very comparable research tools.  Ahrefs has other competition-related functionality, so if you are looking for a reasonable keyword research tool than LTP is your best bet right now.

Also, they have some really great keyword tutorials on YouTube and many are not totally Ahrefs-specific.  They do a great job with the long tail keyword topics.


Keysearch logo is another keyword research tool that I use on a daily basis in addition to LTP.  It has a little less info when you are looking at the Top 10 results for a given search when looking at the keyword difficulty.  Keysearch has Moz’s rank information like DA and PA, but LTP also comes with TF and CF which are Majestic pieces of information.

Keysearch isn’t quite as polished when you trying to find new long tail keywords and you have no idea what direction it will go to find it.  In this way, LTP is more effective.

Keysearch is still a great program and I do also have an active subscription with them as well.  When you’re talking under $20/month it’s a good deal to add to the tools you have available.

Market Samurai

LTP has some advantages over Market Samurai:

  • Long Tail Pro allows you to add multiple seed keywords at once and Market Samurai does not.
  • LTP has more effective filtering capabilities.
  • Market Samurai does not give the Moz data (DA/PA) like LTP and Keysearch does
  • Market Samurai is device-based.  It runs on your computer.  In this day and age I much prefer cloud-based solutions.  They can be used from anywhere.

The Long Tail Pro keyword research tool pulls from the same data as the Google keyword planner so you really get the best features from the planner right in LTP.

Competitor Summary

When you compare it to competitors when you are still trying to succeed and haven’t hit it big yet, Long Tail Pro and Keysearch are your two best bets.

I do have them both but if I had to choose one, I’d go with Long Tail Pro for usefulness.  Just today I found 2 keywords with very low competition and nearly 10,000 searches a month.  In fact, I put one of them in my Long Tail review if you’re interested in reading it here on the blog.

Will Long Tail Keyword Research Work in the Future?

It absolutely will still work.  I actually just wrote about this topic over on my post Is Keyword Research Dead or is it a Hoax and the short of it is that keyword research will stay around.

The thing that may surprise people is it’s not 100% finding a keyword and then using that keyword a lot.  In fact, Google is very much a semantic search engine now.  What that means is that you want to use the keyword you found as your topic for your post.

Write around the topic (keyword) that you find but don’t put so much weight in the keyword itself literally.

It’s all about looking at the keyword and seeing the user intent and writing accordingly.  It’s user-based really.  I got into more detail in the post I linked above with more specific information for how to figure out what the intent is.

Once you see how it works and if you write content the right way it will work even better in the future.  In fact, the more this semantic searching happens, the stronger my site gets as I write for the reader just like you right now.

14 Monster Ideas For How To Increase Website Traffic For Free

Website traffic is vital to running a successful website.  Revenue from profits pays the bills and keeps the lights on. To that end, if you can increase website traffic, you can increase profits as a site.  If you can increase traffic while not spending more on expenses it’s a win-win.

The best way to increase website traffic for free is by writing quality content and following it up with social media interaction.  Starting out, always focus on writing content and work on the social media and outreach once you have 50 content pages minimum.

There are a lot of other sites out there that have done similar posts to this, but this one is going to be a little different.

Why? Many of the lists are from 5+ years ago and they have you putting links to your site from directories and such.  Nowadays that will just get you a penalty.

What I am going to give to you here are safe ways that will stand the test of time and not get you future penalties.

Why Do You Need More Website Traffic?

While every website owner’s ego wants to see a site filled with visitors, there are some practical reasons for having more website traffic.

  • More traffic means more customers means more money in your pocket.
  • More traffic going to your site is an indicator to search engines your site is a prime destination.  It is just one of the factors but is still a real-world indicator that Google uses.

Without the fluff, those are really the 2 biggest reasons.  It’s the same reason that either online or brick-and-mortar, every business wants to grow (and if your website makes money, it needs to be treated as a business).

How to Measure Success of Increased Traffic


Here’s the rub.  Just increasing traffic itself is not necessarily going to make you more money.  Not all traffic is equal.

There is free traffic, and there is converting traffic.  Ideally you want as much converting traffic as possible.

Put another way, you are looking to try to get more people to your site that are in the mindset of purchasing either now or in the near future.

Done right, this is not only entirely possible, but it’s very probably with some elbow grease.

How To Increase ROI of Increased Traffic

As your traffic is increasing, you need to ensure that it is profitable website traffic.

That is, window shoppers won’t pay the bills.  There are a host of ways you can use to ensure that you use the traffic to its utmost.

  • Advertising
  • Collect emails for email marketing
  • Links to affiliate products

There are many ways but the key is to ensure that you use your traffic increases wisely.  Watch Analytics and the Search Console to that you know about your visitor demographics and such.

Free Ways To Increase Website Traffic From Google

1.  Create Fresh New Content

Creating new high-quality content is always the best way to ensure a bright future.  Not only does Google like to see new content on a website so the site doesn’t appear stale, but each new piece of content can rank potentially for thousands of searches and can attract a few more visitors.

Lots of new content over time is what helps to establish a website as an authority in Google’s eyes.

Starting out with a new site, ideally you should have at least 50-60 solid pieces of content with 1200+ words before you worry about social media and such.  You need to build the base first.

If your site is established, you still will want to have at least 2-3 new pieces of content a week to keep the ball rolling and keep increase website traffic from this.

2.  On-Page SEO

The best ways to increase incoming traffic is always to first optimize your site and pages to naturally rank better before looking for new sources of visitors, so that’s where we’ll start today.

I put together a great article for on-page SEO which has a 14-point checklist to get all of the basics setup right on your pages and site.

3.  Review Internal Linking On Your Site

Internal linking within your site offers suggestions to readers of one article.  Within the article, link out to relative articles on your site.  This creates sort of a mesh internal link setup within your site but more importantly, you are giving your read more of the related information they are looking for easily.

4.  Post Your Content To Social Media

After you create your new amazing content, post it to social media to share with all your future readers.  Share it on Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and especially Facebook.  In fact, put some social sharing links on your articles so your readers can like and share it as well.

5. Capture Visitor Emails for Email Marketing

Many visitors may be interested but not ready to purchase.  Email marketing can be very lucrative so offer your readers some extra content such as an ebook that you have written in exchange for subscribing to your email list.  Quite often you can either notify via email on really great new content or perhaps a new affiliate offer that you can give.

6.  Target Long Tail Keywords

Target those niche keywords that have low competition and a decent volume.  The easiest way I’ve found is to use Long Tail Pro which works great at finding long tail keywords like the name suggests.  I can usually find 3-4 keywords that I can rank for within 5 minutes and at $25/month it’s worth it for me.  They do have a 7-day trial of Long Tail Pro if you want to check it out for yourself and if don’t like it, cancel it.  You get some great keywords in the meantime at the least.

7.   Track Your Keyword Rankings

You can track your rankings in Google Search Console or a tool such as SEMrush (get your free SEMrush trial here).  Fairly simple things and there are several free ones out there as well in which I listed a few in an my article on websites to get your true ranking.

8.  Use Google Analytics and the Google Search Console

Both of these Google tools can tell you an amazing amount of information about where your visitors come from, your actual visitor count, and much more.  The search console is really great for seeing what search results have you showing as a search impression.  You can see how you rank for terms and you can see the trend for your site traffic.  These are really great and free resources direct from Google.

9.  Create YouTube Videos the Easy Way

Creating your own YouTube channel and putting some videos on is an easy way to free traffic.  YouTube videos do rank in google searches, but the thing has always been how to create good quality videos relatively easy.  I came across what is a great idea the other day and wow the results are amazing.  This is going to amaze you.

I found a program called Content Samurai (from the markets of Market Samurai) and you can create a video by selecting a template for the general topic (finance, business, food, etc) that you want the video on.  Then you copy in some content you have written, perhaps a few paragraphs or so about the topic, and hit the create button.

I’m going to create an example tomorrow to link to this, but in a a nutshell, there is a voice that reads out your content like a commercial, and it picks up words in each paragraph and will find a matching image and have it as the background while it prints and reads the words in a natural voice.  It’s amazingly well done and you can really create a new video and start uploading it in under 10 minutes and the quality is enough that I’m going to subscribe myself permanently.

Join forums and places such as Reddit and interact with potential customers or current customers.  You may have the perfect solution, and when you’re part of the community you become the likely go-to person for your services and products.

11.  Study Your Competition

Use tools to check out your competition.  Want you are mostly looking for is what search terms your competition is ranking for, and where their backlinks are coming from.  SEMrush is one of the best tools for doing competitor analysis.  You can get a free trial with this link.  Even if you don’t subscribe for a membership, I highly suggest checking it out for free to see how much information it can give you and the edge it can give you over the competition when you know what is letting them rank the way they are.

12.  Guest Blogging

Make sure you find high quality places to guest blog with.  Don’t choose just anyone.  You are going to have a backlink in the author part back to your site so you want to have your guest blogs on sites with the best reputation.  Do your best job on the content that you can.  Both powerful and whitehat.

13.  Publish Studies with Statistical Data that is Original

This one is interesting.  When people write content, they like to cite reference material on the subject.  If you can do studies and publish real research on a subject, you can a high-quality page to link to.  People who want to cite a good source will likely linking to sites with statistics and graphs.  Create a page people can’t help but link to.

14.  Create Your Own Shareable Infographics

Infographics and great and ripe for sharing.  Create an infographic for instance of a 10-point on-page SEO check.  Put your site url at the bottom of the infographic and let people share it.  It works great and you also get links back to your site for credit, so now you have earned lots of real backlinks and boosted your site.  It’s a win-win.  On my post about what long tail keywords are I use an infographic from Ahrefs and attribute them with a link to the page with the original infographic.


So there are a ton of ways you can increase website traffic for free and all it takes is a bit of labor.  If you have time and not so much money to use on the project, then the ways above can work like magic for you.  The key is to continue usage of the methods for an accumulative effect.

Long Tail Pro vs SEMrush – Which One .. Or Both?

Building and running a successful website means that you must have the tools necessary to maintain and build your site on a constant basis to keep bringing in visitors.  Two popular research tools commonly used for this research are Long Tail Pro and SEMrush.

Both Long Tail Pro and SEMrush are very capable tools but they have two different goals.  Long Tail Pro is a keyword that specializes in everything around niche long tail keywords and it does an amazing job at it.  SEMrush is an all-in-one SEO tool that gives you unequaled insight into competitor’s website traffic sources and backlinks.  The right tool may depend on how busy your site is and your budget.  Ideally having both tools would give you the best toolset.

Read along and I’ll give you where each of these tools excels and give you an honest comparison of how these tools compare (when they have similar functionality) as well as give you an idea of which is the right one for you.

What is Long Tail Pro?

Long Tail Pro is a keyword tool originally written in 2011 and it’s been getting better since.  It is a cloud-based tool that puts the power of any device that can access the internet.

The primary goal behind Long Tail Pro (or LTP it’s called for short) is to help you find those niche long tail keywords that have low competition and reasonable search volume. Get a bunch of these, and a newer site can pull some traffic and get the ball rolling.

Long Tail Pro is great at both at finding long tail keywords and being a reasonably priced tool.  Plans start at $25 per month with the Long Tail Pro Starter plan.  It allows up to 800 searches per 24 hours and tracking up to 30 keywords in the rank tracker.

If you are building up a newer site and don’t have a ton of money to throw around, this is undoubtedly the better choice for you.

What is SEMrush?

SEMrush is an all-in-one SEO tool that aims to help the budding webmaster with everything from keyword research to full competitor analysis.

These are the features that SEMrush offers:

  • Keyword research analysis tool
  • Backlink tracking
  • Technical SEO Audit on websites
  • Breakdown of website traffic sources such as organic and paid
  • Advanced competitor analysis

SEMrush keyword search tool starts at $99 per month.  The competitor analysis is quite comprehensive with SEMrush although the price tag is a little steep.  Normally SEMrush is more common among the more-established websites.

How are Long Tail Pro and SEMrush Similar?

While these keyword and domain tools have different overall goals, they have many overlapping areas:

Keyword Research

Both of these tools have strong keyword research tools which aim to give the user an idea of the volume and competition for a given keyword

  • Put in keyword to get a list of related keywords and their relative difficulty and estimated volume
  • Import and export keywords
  • Filter keyword search results
  • SERP analysis on keywords of page 1 website results

While both tools do provide keyword research, the expected goal of the users are a little different which I will go into in the differences section below.

Competitor Analysis

In competitor analysis, both tools have roughly the same goal.  When you do analysis of the competition, you are looking to find out many things about other ranking sites:

  • Keywords the sites rank for, especially top 10 ranking keywords
  • Traffic sources such as organic and paid traffic
  • Geographic distribution of traffic – where are the users physically located
  • Pages that receive the most traffic

While they both provide analysis, the amount and quality of the analysis is where you see a difference between these tools.

How are Long Tail Pro and SEMrush Different?

Now that we’ve looked what type of functionality you get with these tools, the next natural question is how are they different.  One is $25/month and one is $99/month so there should be a big difference.

Long Tail Keyword Research

Here is where keywords do keyword research a little differently.  Long Tail Pro is geared towards finding low competition, good-volume keyword mining.  These are typically searches under a competition score of 30 that have a search volume of 1000 searches or more a month ideally.  A site can rank for these with quite often no backlinks, so they are perfect for a new site.  These new sites just won’t rank for searches where the top sites all have good, established authority.

When you search in Long Tail Pro (also known as LTP), you see search results like this.  It’s easy to pick out colors and the search volume is there.  The Bid column shows you how desirable the keyword ranking is from an advertising standpoint but don’t lose sleep over it.

When you search in SEMrush, you’ll see results like this:

With SEMrush you’ll get trends, how related it is to the main keyword, estimated search volume, keyword density (ignore this column but see my pro tip below on keyword density or lack thereof), and CPC (same as Bid in LTP) for the keyword.

They both give you relatively the same info but I have to give LTP the edge here if you are brainstorming for new keywords that aren’t overrun with competition.

What Keyword Info Do These Give That Really Matters?

So here’s the thing.  Keywords matter and they don’t.  Not many people will tell you this, but especially lately with the Google BERT update in january 2020, Google is doing semantic searches and not keyword-specific searches.  What this means is that don’t focus on the keyword itself.  Absolutely don’t focus on keyword density.  Those will ensure you don’t rank.

Only Google really knows the exact search volume and I can tell you for terms I rank high for they rarely ever match the predicted.

So What Info Should You Pay Attention To?

If you are new, you want to look at the keyword difficulty in which Long Tail Pro is very good at that.  They base it on backlinks and such.  However, I can show you terms where I outrank sites with 10x the Domain Authority (Moz) that I have, so it’s much more than that.  Google is trying to figure out who is the authority is to best answer a given searcher’s question.

So no matter what tool, you need to go look at page 1 and even page 2 in Google to see the results Google thinks is best.  Look at them and ask yourself this:

  • Do they really answer the intent of the search?
  • How much authority do the sites have?

It takes more than being the best answer to get to the top, but rest assured to get there and stay there you really do have to have the most helpful content/

Pro Tip: When you find a keyword that you think you can rank for, ensure that you look at the related searches near the bottom to help determine the user intent.  When you write, write on the keyword as a topic and not specifically that keyword.  Don’t put it in there too many times.  The real key is to write around that topic for the reader.  Make it the most helpful content and easy to read and you’re going down the right road.

Competitor Research

Long Tail Pro has the ability to do competitor research in two different ways.

The first way is plugging in a competitor’s URL into the keyword research section and LTP will start giving you related keywords based on that competitor’s page.

The second way is you can actually plug into the URL into a SERP Analysis section and get a full analysis breakdown.


SEMrush has the same two similar abilities to based keywords and a full SERP analysis on a competitor’s url, but that’s just the start.

SEMrush can be competitive analysis giving you information about traffic sources.  This one is handy as you can see where your competitor’s traffic comes from, either organic or paid.  This actually makes a huge difference because then you find out which keywords or what ads they are buying.  If they are having to buy ads to keep up that’s a really positive sign for your website for instance.

You get information about the top content pages, search performance, advertising performance, and even lots of info around backlink profiles.

The backlink profiles are a very strong part of what makes SEMrush what it is.  Being able to see where your competitors got their backlinks from might make it a bit easier for you to see you need to get yours from.  There’s a good chance you might be able to get them from the same sites in the form of an article or a guest post.

Being able to do competition analysis is a key need of building a website.  It may seem far away when you’re just trying to get 20 visitors a day but at some point it becomes extremely important.

How Much Do These Tools Cost?

Long Tail Pro starts out at $25 per month with the Long Tail Pro Starter plan.  It allows up to 800 searches per 24 hours and tracking up to 30 keywords in the rank tracker.

SEMrush starts out at $99.00 per month.

While both tools have many common things like keyword rank tracking and such, these tools are still different enough that just using them will likely make it really easy to tell which one you need.

Long Tail Pro has a $1 trial for 7 days and you can really use it quite a bit in that time.

SEMrush has a free trial which lets you use much of the service and check it out.

Once you see it first-hand, you’ll definitely gravitate towards one or the other.  The key is to actually use it to help build your site.  Use the functionality and don’t focus on looks or anything like that.  Focus on what you get out of it because that’s exactly what a tool is for.  The one you choose should help you advance your site’s visitor count.

Long Tail Pro vs SEMrush – Which is better?

I’ll be honest, it’s tough to really compare these tools in this way.

If you’re a newer site with lower traffic and you are still establishing your authority, then you’re likely not at the traffic levels where you need to leverage the tools that SEMrush comes with.  Long Tail Pro is better at finding long tail keywords and it finds them quick.  If you head over to my Long Tail Pro review you’ll see from start to end doing a real niche long tail keyword search and the results were better than I would have guessed.  It’s not a one-off result but I just picked keto diets as a general topic and just recorded some screenshots.   Some of the long tail keywords actually had thousands of searches a month and it shows the whole process.

If you are an established site then you likely already have a bit of authority and you can rank for some slightly bigger searches.  While LTP would help you find some mid-range searches easier, SEMrush with it’s advanced toolset of competitor analysis might be of more value for you where you’re not down fighting for individual keywords.

If it doubt, get both.  I myself use 3 different tools because they all excel in different ways.  I use to help brainstorm real searches users are doing.  To keep going you need to pull on the tools you have available and use them to their capabilities.

How To Do Keyword Research For Your Blog

If you’re like me, starting out I read so much about doing my keyword research.  That’s all I heard. Do. The. Research.

But what does it really mean? How exactly do you do all of this keyword research?

It seems the term is thrown out there, but I know when I started out, I needed a guide to follow.

And that’s what I am going to do for you here today.

Keyword Research is the process of finding keywords with low enough competition and high enough volume that ranking for them will increase website traffic.  It is the first step in content writing and will always be relevant.

I have heard people saying keywords themselves and therefore keyword research are not relevant anymore.  They are, but the game has undoubtedly changed with the Google BERT update that came at the end of 2019.

Does Keyword Research Still Work?

In recent times with Google doing semantic searches that less emphasis is put on the literal keywords and more on the intent of the keywords.

To be honest, it’s been a long time since stuffing as many keywords in content was a good idea.  This is just another step in the direction to find searches the truly best information.

And that’s what the keyword research leads to.  You’re looking for good topics to break into.  You are finding keywords where you can outrank the competition and then writing around the topic.

Why do Need Keyword Research?

At its core, Keyword research is a process that helps you direct how you create your content.

Research done correctly can help you with all of these:

  • Find popular keywords to help you see what content your visitors are looking for.
  • Find popular keywords with low competition.  These are long tail keywords and are a key if you have a newer site.
  • Find out what content of your competitors is ranking for good traffic and what keywords they rank for.
  • Increase website traffic using free methods.

Keyword research helps you identify keywords and topics that have less competition.  Less competition means you rank higher and get a larger portion of the search engine traffic.

Seems like a great idea and it’s time instead of money you need to invest (unless you pay someone to do the work of course).

How To Do Keyword Research?

So I’ll show you here today how I do my keyword research.

1.  Pick Your Topic

Pick your general topic that you are working on.  It is usually your overall topic of the site such as bowling or a special diet.

2.  Fire Up Your Favorite Keyword Research Tool

This is where the magic happens.  How easy it is to find the keywords you are looking for depends on the tool you are using.

For this I’ll fire up a copy of SEMrush.  SEMrush is an amazing keyword research tool and you can actually do real keyword research using a free SEMrush account.

As an example I’ll plug in “keto diet” as a starting keyword figuring a site could be on keto diets which is very popular right now.

You can see the Com. column which shows the competition level between 0 and 1.    I would go much farther at this point adding in more keywords to keep looking for something with a little less competition than these ones but you get the idea.

If you are working on a newer site, you are going to want to look for long tail keywords.  These have even less competition but with less volume as well.  Until you site has authority, you have to pick the low-hanging fruit.

For that, I’ll fire up my copy of Long Tail Pro. If you want to try this, you can get a 7-day trial of Long Tail Pro for $1 which is pretty amazing.

Putting in the same keto diet and then hitting the +20 button on a few terms to turn them back in as additional keywords, I was able to quickly come up with 5-6 sure-fire winners inside of 3 minutes.

Terms like cheap keto meals and keto diet food list printable are all very doable for a newer site to rank on page 1 with a really well written piece of content.  Up to about a competitiveness level of 30 you can do without backlinks.

For long tail keywords I would 100% recommend Long Tail Pro.  Even for those few days you get a ton of use of it and you can make a substantial list of keywords and export them to use later.

3.  Write Your Killer Content

Now that you have a list of keywords, the next thing to do is write the actual content.

Pick a strong title to grab some attention, and then start to write.  Make it relatable but informational.  The key is, you want to make your content helpful.

Let’s say you were doing the “cheap keto meals” as your keyword to write with.  The first step is to come up with topic around that and title it.

Perhaps something like “Cheap Keto Meals You Can Make At Home For Under $20” would be a good start.

Next pick a few topic points, much like I have done in this very article.  Perhaps it would be 4 different meal recipes for under $20 for the main topics.

Then go back and fill in the content under each.  Now you have very strong content that provides what it says.

4.  Rinse and Repeat

Rinse and repeat.  Do enough content so that you become an authority.  This may take 75-100 articles or more, it truly depends on the topic.

What you are building is a very informative site that will stand the test of time and only get stronger within Google.  In fact, once you are established


Enjoy your well-researched website with your amazingly informative content.

Done right, once you get the site starting to roll a bit you can even dial it back here and there and it’ll still keep gaining.  Push hard with more articles and it’ll speed up the amount of website traffic you get.

I’ve even heard of people that built a site with 100 articles and got it up to say $2000 a month in revenue, and then getting tied up with things and coming back in 6 months and it’s making $2500-3000 just because the content was so well done it naturally get stronger and gains authority.

And since you’re building what really is the recommended way through Google, this really will stand the test of time and new Google updates.  No more holding your breath on every major search engine update.  It’s building a very stable asset and creates money.
